The Character Through the Arts website offers a number of lessons that focus on "big ideas" through literacy using rich mentor texts and teaching character using music, art and drama. Teachers and artists have formed a partnership to submit lesson ideas and activities to use in the classroom.

Teaching Tolerance

At a recent workshop I discover some wonderful FREE resources for teachers that I believe fit nicely with our Character Education initiative and have a focus on equity, inclusion and diversity. The magazine is titled "Teaching Tolerance" and focuses on such issues as poverty, homelessness, bias, cyber-bullying and others with the purpose of helping students to deepen their cultural understanding. This is a free resource to teachers. Archived articles are also found on the link below.

The importance of character development in our students is reflected in the daily work of our schools and as a priority in our Board policies, practices and interactions. An intentional and purposeful focus on character development supports student learning and is viewed as the foundation of student success as found in the Community, Care and Culture pillar of our Board Improvement Plan.
